Each time I go to a hotel, one thought always bothers me. A thought that struck my mind each time I visit a hotel for a stay, a thought of being watched!! Every single second and every single day I think about it. I do check my surroundings for mental relaxation each time and to ensure that the room is completely 'private' and safe. Being a girl I don't want to face a situation as mentioned in the following news:

And I don't want this to happen with you too. So, here are some tips on how to protect yourself from such hidden cameras which can destroy your privacy!!

Ideal places for hidden cameras: The places to be checked at hotels

There are some special places where usually hidden cameras are placed. Must check these spots when entering a hotel or a new apartment:

  • Smoke detector: The most ideal place to hide a hidden camera. You can't even think that the smoke detector present in your room is actually watching you!! People never think about it.
  • Electrical outlets/ plug sockets: We don't use every single plug socket when we visit a hotel, do we?? This is another ideal place to hide a camera.
  • Clock, lamps, radio, artificial plants, air purifier, paintings etc: You need to be very careful. Any of the above mentioned thing may hide a camera around them.
  • Behind the wall mounted mirrors: Yep... Mirrors can also 'watch' you. Don't think that you only can watch yourself in the mirror. The mirror present in your room may also have 'eyes'!!

So, you can see every place, in fact, every object in a hotel room can accommodate a hidden camera..!!

Can you think of a pinhole camera in a pen??

No worries... You can protect your privacy..!!

What can you do?? You should try your best to protect your privacy, don't you think?? I have some tips on how you can protect your privacy.

  • Check the smoke detector. Use a ladder or chair to reach up to the height of the smoke detector. Then take a torch/flashlight and flash the light on the detector. If you see small glass lenses then watch it, the smoke detector has a camera!!
  • Check every single plug socket/ electrical outlet. Use every single sockets. Try to charge your cell phone or laptop or any other electrical device. If the socket has a camera, it won't work.
  • You should search for pinhole cameras in the books, paintings, air purifier etc. Use a torch/ flashlight and check carefully. If you find a pinhole sized hole then it might contain a camera. Also search for wiring for wired cameras. If you see any unusual wire coming out from 'somewhere' and going 'nowhere' then that can be a part of hidden camera.
  • You've got two methods to check whether the wall mounted mirror has got eyes or not. First method, take a flashlight and flash the light on the mirror. Take the flashlight towards the mirror until it touches the mirror. If you see the light is passing through the mirror or if you can see across the mirror then that mirror has got 'eyes'. Such mirrors are called as a one way or two way mirrors. In second method, you can simply use your finger tip. Put the tip of your finger on the mirror. If you see a distance between your fingertip and the image then that means it's a normal mirror and doesn't contains any danger. But if there is no distance between the actual finger and its image then beware...that's a one-way mirror.

Check hidden camera in trial rooms using your cell phone!!

Make a call from your cell phone outside the trial room. Ensure that you are able to make calls outside. Then enter the trial room, close the door and again try to make calls. If you are unable to do so then that means a hidden camera is watching you!! This is because of the interference of fiber optic cable during the signal transfer

What else you could do??

Here are some more tips:

  • Your room may also have small microphones, listening all your talkies!! Check for such near drawers, book shelves, paintings and every possible places.
  • Turn off the lights and check for small red or green light. Some microphones and cameras may have such power-on indicators. Don't neglect them.
  • Listen carefully. Enter quietly in your room and listen for some buzz or click sounds. Re-enter your room again and again quietly and if the sound is produced each time you enter, then it may be a camera as some motion sensitive cameras produced such sounds while operating.
  • Check the unusual things in the room. Tilted paintings, oddly arranged artificial plants etc and even any kind of pen already present in the room.
  • At last, but not the least, you can buy a camera detector which is available in market at less than $80. Using these detectors you can check the presence of cameras. Follow the video to see how it works.

Search hidden cameras using camera detector!!

Wear an inner wear like this before going out for shopping and using a trial room!! Funny but safe...

Additional advice and information:

  • There is a distance between the image and the object (in this case, finger tip) in a normal mirror because the silvering is done on the back of the mirror whereas in a one-way mirror the silvering is done on the surface. A person standing behind such mirrors can see you but you can't see the person from the other side. A camera can also be placed behind such mirrors. So, be careful!!
  • I would recommend you to wear a medium sized inner wear like in the picture before using a trial room. I mean, it covers most of the body. Trial rooms are reported to have pinhole cameras.

I hope this hub was helpful for you. Check your surroundings very carefully. Try these tips out each time you visit a hotel or a new apartment. Stay healthy and stay careful!!

This is a very interesting and thought-provoking article.

There have been numerous cases in the U.S. where landlords install cameras in their women-renters' bathrooms and bedrooms.

The only good thing is that this technology makes it easier to watch the watchers!

Very interesting! Voting up and accolades!

@serena... yeah tech do helps us as well as the watchers!! The only thing we can do is keep our eyes open...wide open...in fact ears too.. thanks for the comments... :-)

If I was paranoid before, now I am REALLY paranoid. :) I have always thought about this. Technology in this area is just really good, and so being suspect is probably not all that paranoid at all, but FOUNDED in some real possibility that you could well be being watched. People have curiosities. People are voyeurs. It's partly why porn is so popular. And so it goes without saying that one should always keep an eye on the eyes on you. I will certainly keep some of these tips in mind the next time I suspect I may be in a place where it's supposed to be private, but could well be public.

Wow! I had no idea. So glad I read your hub and now I'm aware of hidden cameras. I tried the fingertip test but not sure if I did it right. When pressing my fingertip to the mirror, I saw my fingertip, where I was pressing. Is this right? Am I safe? Thanks and voted UP!

@vocalcoach... I'm glad that you found it useful. :)

And for fingertip test, there should a distance between your finger and its image. In one way mirrors, there will be no distance between the actual finger and the image.

Best is to cover the mirror and television with towel, sleep with blanket over you. check anything that looks black glass like in the bathroom and paste bubblegum over it, if suspected.

@tintin25.... Thanks for adding the points.. :)

Yes, I often read of stories in the news of someone placing cameras in private places. I have daughters and I worry about this. One thing to do to sharpen up is just to become aware of all the security cameras wherever you go.
